The Secret Success is Right in Front of You
Whenever people are looking for success they look hard for some secret that will wake them up to a whole new person. However, life hardly ever goes the way we want. That’s because in order to become something you’re not you have to reinvent yourself.
That’s where you’ll find the secret you’re looking for: You. Look, this is your life and if you want it to be different, then you need to do something different. No one will make the things you want happen for you.
On the bright side, however, you already have the power within you to achieve massive success. The people who lose 60 pounds or turn their lives around didn’t change the person they are. It’s still that same person who did all these things. I am the same human being that weighed over 200 lbs at 15, that did not change. Therefore, I did not gain some superpower. On the contrary, I used who I was to my advantage.
I played to my strengths in order to achieve my goals, and you can too. Here’s how you can unlock your potential and become the master of your destiny.
Understand How You Got Here
If you’re reading this then you are probably looking to change the way you look, and more importantly, change your life.
That also means that you’ve been through some stuff because in order to desire change you have to be unhappy with something. That thing doesn’t just bother you though, it haunts you.
So in order to begin the process of change you need to start looking back and figure out how things got this way. Look back into your past as objectively as possible and analyze your life.
I’ll go first and start with my own personal example of when I started my weight loss journey at 15.
At 15 starting a weight loss journey was tough because I never knew where to start. I didn’t know a lick about exercise or nutrition. Prior to that, I was a notoriously picky eater, I even ate a strict diet, it just so happened to be a strict diet of pizza rolls, peanut butter and jelly, and Pepsi. Therefore, it was no surprise that at the age of 15 I was easily 200+ pounds.
I grew up in a normal family in America, where junk food could be found anywhere and is used as a reward for the smallest occasions. Also, since my parents were never in great shape they believed that you had to starve yourself to get into shape. Naturally, I believed the same as well. So when it finally came time for me to lose weight I had a horrible relationship with food. Since I believed my metabolism sucked I convinced myself that starving was the only way to get in shape. I ate all the same junk food but just a whole lot less.
Analyze:
We are going to take a step back from my story right now and dissect it. First of all, since junk food was always available and it was used as a reward it’s safe to say food and I were best friends. Always having access to junk food was my biggest problem because it became all that I ate. I mean, if you had to choose between a chicken breast or a bag of Doritos and a sandwich would you ever pick the chicken?
Lesson:
This situation taught me a valuable lesson that I always share with my clients: don’t keep food in the pantry you don’t want to eat. If the food is in your house then eventually a time will come when it’ll end up in your mouth. Instead, if that food is something you really want to eat then you’ll need to work to get it. When you do this you’re adding an additional barrier to that food. This gives you time to think about whether or not you want it if it’s worth it, and remind you why you’re doing this.
Analyze:
When it came to starving myself I was convinced I was doing the right thing, the scale was going down after all. However, I didn’t know that all the weight I was losing was just likely muscle. This mentality is fairly common in people. We’re told from a young age that if you’re fat that just means your metabolism sucks, and you need to eat a lot less to work around it.
Back then I wish I knew that if we never challenge our thoughts, then we accept them as facts. It’s pretty much the equivalent of your parents telling you you’re entire life that Santa is real. If you’re taught that, and nothing else, as a kid then you will always believe it. However, if I looked at my parents I would’ve quickly realized they didn’t know what they were talking about.
Lesson:
Looking back what I should’ve done is challenge all my beliefs because they were what got me there in the first place. I eventually did challenge my belief mindset when I was watching a youtube video and they asked: “Why would you listen to the opinion of someone who couldn’t do it?”
BOOM that moment right then and there was life-changing. It opened my eyes and I realized my parents couldn’t possibly know much about weight loss because they’re clearly out of shape! Now whenever I assume something is a fact, I take a step back and ask: “Is what I’m thinking really true? What’s the proof it is true?” You see, what this does is open you up to a world of endless possibilities because by accepting something as factual you eliminate all other possibilities. If I held onto my beliefs then I never would’ve learned that you can have your cake and eat it too.
Why Do You Want to Change?
The key to being in control of your life is having a purpose. Without having a why you won’t be able to persist long term.
If you are going to do something hard it will crush you, test you, and push you past your limits. That’s the only way you can become more than you are now. Just like how pressure turns rock into diamonds, all the pressure of change will turn you into a diamond.
In order to survive the pressure, you have to have a strong connection with your why. If your why is weak, then you will fold easily. However, if you have a strong why then you will be able to persist through obstacles. Think about it who will last longer someone who is motivated because they saw an epic youtube video or the person who wants to escape a life of obesity?
The latter has more skin in the game. You see, when you’re obese you never feel comfortable in your body. You face bullying, teasing, or people staring at you. Then, when it finally becomes time to change there’s a lot on the line. Getting in shape becomes about finding happiness and self-love.
Meanwhile, the person who got excited from a youtube video might get a small blip of motivation, but they have no motivation beyond that “it looks cool”. When your why is weak then when it comes time to put in the necessary work you won’t have the necessary resilience to succeed.
A big change requires big motivation.
For me, I had been obese for most of my life so I was bullied, insecure, and genuinely unhappy. It had just reached a point where I just couldn’t accept life anymore. To me, it was change or die. There’s a story where a general had to sail with his army to fight a battle. When he landed they were outnumbered, so the general ordered the soldiers to burn the boats. They had no option but to win if they were going to return home. That’s what it felt like to me at the time.
When you have a powerful why then you will finally have the key to gaining control of your life. It’s the #1 thing people are missing. When your life’s on the line then you’ll do whatever to succeed.
Once you are connected with your why you need to have a plan to put it to work. You see, your why is your personal motivation battery, it’s a tool you use for success. Whenever things get tough you have to tap into it in order to keep going on. The downside is if you don’t think about it often, then you won’t be able to make the necessary changes.
So you need to create a plan that helps you stay on track & in tune with your goal. Here are some things that help me:
- Motivational Speakers
- Reading
- Listening to Motivational Music
- Staying Off My Phone When I Ate
- Meditating
- Journaling
If you’re like most people and work a 9-5, then you need to make an effort to remind yourself of your goal. In order to do that you need to awareness.
Be In the Now

It’s become very hard to be present in today’s age because of all the information we are bombarded with. However, it’s an important skill to be in the now.
What does it mean to be in the now? You might be asking. It means you are consciously aware of what is happening this very second. You probably think I’m crazy, but when is the last time you paid attention to something like what food feels like when you eat it?
We are always thinking about this or that and never really pay real attention to what’s happening right now. We are creatures of habit. But in order to have massive success, you have to be deliberate, meaning you cannot resort to what you habitually do.
In real life, an example of this would be when you’re eating you do nothing else. By paying more attention to a scenario like eating a meal you’ll be able to catch yourself in your bad habits. Once you’re aware you’re doing something you shouldn’t that is when you are able to change. Instead of habitually stopping by your favorite fast food you’ll be able to think your way out of eating it.
You Are the Captain of Your Ship
Who we are is a result of what we do, but only those who are successful will admit it. We’re all self-made and the only person who is in control of who we become is ourselves. The people with inspirational stories, who have come from a background of poverty to becoming a millionaire, knew the only person who could change their lives was themselves. When you accept this fact you can grab control of the wheel and start steering in the right direction.
You will become the master of your destiny when you:
- Make Sense of How You Got to This Point
- Know & Identiy With Your Reason Why
- Practice Awareness
Anyone who has ever experienced success does these 3 things to some degree. Stop looking for the magic pill, there ain’t one, instead start working on improving yourself.
